In the new wave of new restaurants that have opened at the Renaissance Marketplace, Grand Fish makes a splash!

For those in the know, Grand Fish has already been a go-to spot for local dishes, including, of course, fresh fish and seafood. I did not have the pleasure of knowing them, but that was about to change.

The new and shiny Grand Fish is located right next to Starbucks, overseeing the Renaissance Marina and Seaport Casino, probably in the most coveted strip of the Marketplace. You can’t miss it! The Terrace makes for the perfect spot to people-watch while enjoying a drink.

Inside, they have decorated the place with a colorful tropical print, cozy tables that run to the back, and a large bar that immediately grabs your attention. You decide your vibe here, whether it's the lively terrace or a more intimate table inside.

Let’s get to it!

When I saw how big the bar was, I asked Alejandra, our lovely host, if there was a drink of importance I should not miss, and indeed there were some.

She immediately suggested their Sangría, a staple in the orders of the regular clients. Then, of course, I have to have it. I am here for the full Grand Fish experience.

I can totally see why people like it so much; it has body, it is made fresh daily, and it comes nicely presented. If you are a Sangría fan, add this one to your list.

They also let me try their Cosmopolitan Martini, a total hit!

Their drink menu is extensive; from Whiskey to Gin, cocktails, liqueurs, and Martinis, you name it, they probably have it.

Now that I’ve looked into the menu, the choice is obvious: I have to go the fish route.

A nice courtesy is presented, crispy Pan Bati nibbles topped with fresh cheese to open up that appetite. It was hard not to ask for a second serving.

Mussels Gratin

I wanted to try their biggest hits, and quickly, Alejandra suggested I must try the Mussels Gratin, a dish that every client has raved about.

Five fresh mussels, served with a creamy white wine sauce, a sprinkle of parmesan, and then torched for that last touch. I enjoyed it even though I usually never go for seafood and dairy, it was very savory, giving a creamy escargot vibe.

Catch of the Day

They offer you different kinds of fish depending on what the fishermen have brought in. Grouper, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Red Snapper… there will always be a few alternatives. I went for the Mahi.

Here, you can choose the sauce for your fish: Criolla (tomato based), Creamy Garlic, Meunière, or Mango if your thing is a sweet kick. I particularly like to have the least intense sauce to let the fish shine. Meunière was a great choice, in my opinion. The Fish was perfectly cooked, and the sides were a good pairing: mashed potatoes, fresh veggies, and fried plantain. The presentation is an A+, a great dish all around.

Salmon Filet with Capers Sauce

They insisted I try their newest addition to the menu: a fresh salmon filet with capers sauce. A killer dish, the richness of the salmon goes so well with the brininess of the capers. For the Salmon lovers out there, this is the one for you!

I left in fish bliss, honestly, it is always nice going to a restaurant for the first time and leaving with nothing but good comments. The service was great, the presentations were top (the pics speak for themselves), and the location is unbeatable.

Now, I have a new place to recommend to locals and visitors when they ask for a place to eat fish with the local flair.

With the convenience of the Renaissance Marketplace, this one could be hard to beat. Keep it up Grand Fish!

Pro Tip: They also offer a lunch special that includes the soup of the day and several main dish options for 25 florins ($16). Now that is a deal!
